Bleeding Hearts

This is one of my photographs which I'm posting today because the Bleeding Hearts in my garden are magnificent, prolific, and currently in full bloom!

I'm told this is what is left of the Wolf Moon. I think this is night 3. I wish I had the patience to photograph this properly -- the way Ansel Adams would have photographed it. But capturing it at all, is good enough for me.

The camera does not take pictures ...

... the photographer does!

And so goes the age old misconception that great imagery is based solely on the type of camera you have, when, in fact, a camera is just a tool that the photographer uses to capture images. "That camera takes great pictures!". (Think: Guns don't kill people, people do.) You do not need an expensive camera to take great photographs since I know plenty of people who own high end cameras and believe me, they are by no stretch of the imagination photographers nor amateurs. (They are, however, great consumers!)

Afterall, let's not forget the very affordable image making vehicles ... the Kodak Brownie, the Diana, and the Holga. So, in the spirit of this cartoon: the convenient and readily available camera-phone, here are a few shots I took with my cell phone. As you can see, I just disproved my theory -- these are not great pictures since the quality is lacking. But then, I didn't say anything about resolution. : )

I stand by the belief that a great photographer can create a great photograph with even, if necessary, a pinhole camera. (Let's just hope it isn't necessary.)

Happy Halloween!

too close to it

Part of me wanted to include this shot on my current website but then the other part of me said:

• --You're only as good as your most current work.
• --Maybe it's dated.
• --The dresses should be tighter.
• --But wait -- I styled the whole thing!
• --I directed the make-up!
• --This was one of my first tests! And I put this together on the cheap. Models, hair & make-up, accessories, returnable wardrobe from Bloomies -- everything -- FREE!

Yeah, but so what? Since when did sentimentality become a component of a sound photograph?

I asked my web designer for his input -- gave him the disclaimer that I knew it didn't really fit with the other work and he came back to say, "as far as the 80s shot ...". Right then and there I knew I was TOO CLOSE TO IT. "The 80s shot."

Lesson Learned: Sometimes a photographer is too close to their work to be a good editor.
