Jacques Henri Lartigue

I have always said that Lartigue's work was that as seen through a child's eyes and indeed that is what much of it was.  He was born into a wealthy family in France and he photographed what was around him starting at age seven -- he documented daily life and quite often, society ladies. It wasn't, however, until later in life that his childhood photographs were given recognition.  Quite by accident, he was ultimately introduced to John Szarkowski, curator of the Museum of Modern Art who produced an exhibition of his work.  As an adult, Lartigue shot fashion and just about anyone he met.  To read more on Jacques Henri Lartigue, click here and here and here.

Nick Brandt Exhibit in New York City ... Hasted Kraeutler Gallery

I wish I had found out about this sooner, as it closes Saturday, 2 November, 2013.  Here is a great video of Nick Brandt talking about this body of work (and his work in general) and the potential fate of these magnificent animals he photographs.

David Doubilet

I realize I am LONG overdue in posting!  I also realize that I have not done (so far as I can tell) a post on David Doubilet's work which is more than a shame; it is a disgrace.  I love his work!  I'm not sure why I haven't featured his work sooner.  There is no underwater photography that is so artful, so unbelievable, so powerful, so magical.  He is also a prolific shooter so just when you think you have seen a mass quantity of his photographs, there is still more - and consistently, he produces awe-inspiring imagery.    I came across a book of his when I was on the island of Andros in the Bahamas at a Dive Resort.  I immediately, upon arriving back in the States, went out and bought a copy.

Election Day ... VOTE!

Robert Frank gave us, "The Americans", a book that was originally issued over 50 years ago.  I thought this photograph from the book would be a fitting image for today.  (Here is a link about the re-issued book and his background, here is an editorial piece from a blog I found, and here is an NPR article, all worth reading.)

Irving Penn Masks

Around this time in October of 2009, Irving Penn passed away at the age of 92.  (Click here for a bio the New York Times published in 2009.)Here is a compilation of images featuring masks ... something apropos of October and its bearing of Halloween.
